Playing it Safe is out now. This is the third instalment in my soccer series, Love Goals. I say it every time but I loved writing Noah’s story.

Some characters get under my skin and he was one of them. When I was planning this series I wanted one MC to be relatively unspoilt by the world of money and fame.

What is Playing it Safe about?

This is Noah and Carmine’s story. We’re halfway into the new season at Brockton FC. After declaring themselves a safe space for gay players during the summer, the furore has died down. There is still a core of fans who are vehemently opposed to this but results speak for themselves. The team are thriving.

Noah is a young man with more responsibilities than his teammates. They just care about sports cars and flash restaurants.

Orphaned very young, Noah took on the responsibility of his disabled brother. Noah is determined to set Malcolm up for life before he can even think about enjoying his money.

But he gives in under pressure from family and friends to treat himself too and buys a plot of land. He’s settled perfectly in Brockton and is keen to lay some roots. Now he needs to find someone who can help him build a house.

Carmine Amato is a member of Brockton’s unofficial royal family, the Amato’s who run the most popular restaurant in the town. After spending many years in Los Angeles, he’s come home. Problem is he hasn’t actually told his family he’s gay. This late coming out is terrifying to Carmine. It was great to show Carmine’s growing confidence to have this conversation.

Never an easy one no matter what stage of life.

As a couple these two fascinated me. I loved plotting their way to a happy ending. Clearly I didn’t make it easy on them but where’s the fun in that?
